The World Cup of Chess was a 206-player single-elimination chess tournament held in Baku, Azerbaijan from July 30 to August 24, 2023. It was the 10th World Chess Cup, and the winner is Magnus Carlsen. Normally, the top three finalists in the tournament will qualify for the Candidates Tournament in 2024, but as Magnus Carlsen is unlikely to play in the Candidates Tournament, the remaining semi-finalists will qualify. The tournament was held alongside the Women's World Chess Championship 2023. Jan-Krzysztof Duda was the defending champion, but lost in the fifth round to Fabian Caruana. To this trophy, which was missing from his rich treasury, Magnus Carlsen came after a fast-paced playoff (25 minutes for the whole game with an addition of 10 seconds after each move) against the Indian Rameshbabu Praggnanandha.
